Yin
and Yang
Twin
sisters, Tina and Judy Kavanagh were promoted to Green belt at a recent grading
in Stillorgan Taekwon-Do School. The
sisters (13) from Sandyford have been learning this Korean art of self defense
at St. Laurence's Community Centre, Kilmacud for just over a year.
The
Green belt symbolises that the girls are proficient at defending themselves with
a variety of blocks, kicks, strikes and punches.
Asked
how does he tell the girls apart, their instructor Floyd Keane (4th
Degree Black belt) said "They're completely different in their attitude and
even some of their techniques are different.
They're like Yin and Yang".
Taekwon-Do
techniques are based on scientific principles and depend on skill rather than
brute strength so it is suitable for people of all ages and size.
The
Taekwon-Do School is celebrating its 5th birthday this October and is
still going strong. Its current membership of 35 comprises of men, women and
children and several family members. As
part of its birthday celebrations, the school is starting special beginners self
defense classes on Saturday 9th October, 12 - 1 pm.
Classes are also held on Tuesdays, 7 - 8 pm.
